Berks County operates on a specified once-a-month drop-off location for recyclable materials in each of its 11 townships, according to a schedule located at www.co.berks.pa.us/berks/cwp/view.asp?A=1171&Q=446722. If you cannot make it to the designated drop-off date within your township, you can bring your recyclables to the main center for recycling drop-offs, which is located within the Bern Township on Hill Top Road in Leesport. At this main recycling center, you can drop off clear, brown, green glass, aluminum and bi-metallic cans, plastic PET #1 and HDPE #2 newsprint, cardboard, phonebooks, magazines, junk mail, catalogs, office paper all grades, and paperboard every weekday from 8 am to 5 pm. For any other questions, call 610-378-5117.
The County operates an extensive buy back program for recycling, as well as numerous other drop-off centers for specific recyclable materials (such as rechargeable batteries, tires, and propane tanks), and the drop-off centers are located throughout the County. You can view the complete list of buy back recycling centers, as well as a complete listing of all Berks County drop-off recycling centers, at berksweb.com/recycle/.

As of the 2000 census, and based on Act 101's requirements for population density, South Heidelberg Township has become a newly mandated recycling municipality. The Township has never administered a curbside trash collection and/or recyclables collection program. Spurred by their new recycling mandate, South Heidelberg intends to implement an effective recycling and waste collection program that meets Act 101 and PA DEP requirements. The Township will work to provide comprehensive and beneficial waste collection services to South Heidelberg residents. As of April 2003, Pike and District Townships were in the process of developing a cooperative drop-off recycling program for these two municipalities, inviting any surrounding interested municipalities to join in. Because of the rural nature of the Townships and the small population, a coordinated effort between multiple municipalities would help to reduce the cost of such a recycling program for this agricultural area. The entire proposal is available at www.dep.state.pa.us/dep/deputate/airwaste/wm/RECYCLE/Tech_Rpts/Pike.pdf. The proposal provides information on the drop-off locations within multiple municipalities of Berks County.
