City of Philadelphia Recycling Information
1. What materials can I recycle at the curbside
in the City of Philadelphia?
At the curbside, residents in all areas of Philadelphia can recycle:
| Mixed Paper, including: Newspapers including inserts Junk mail Envelopes (with or without windows) Telephone books Magazines and catalogs Cereal type boxes - no liners please! Home office paper Stationery and other clean paper |
For areas of the City with dual stream recycling (north, northwest, and lower northeast), place mixed paper beside your recycling bin in a paper bag or tied with a string.
| Commingled materials, including:
Metal cans Aluminum cans Empty aerosol cans (no caps please!) Empty paint cans (air dried) Paint can lids (separated from the paint cans) Glass bottles and jars |
For areas of the City with single stream recycling (northeast, west, southwest, south, and Center City), please ALL recyclable materials IN your blue recycling container (including mixed paper). Single stream recycling areas may also recycle plastics #1 & #2 and corregated cardboard, along with the materials listed above.
For a key map of the City's recycling program, visit: http://64.78.36.115/pdf/keymap.pdf.
2. Where can I recycle plastic and cardboard in Philadelphia if I live in an area that doesn't currently accept them at the curb?
Plastics #1 and #2 (find the number on the bottom of plastic items) and cardboard can currently be recycled through the Philadelphia Partnership Recycling Program, a collection of volunteers who collect recyclables at drop off sites and use the revenue from the recyclables to fund local community programs.
To find the Partnership Program Drop-off Site near you, visit: http://64.78.36.115/prog_partnership.asp.
3. I don't have a City recycling container. How do I get one?
| You can set out bottles and cans in ANY sturdy, hard-sided container less than 20 gallons in size. NO cardboard boxes, NO plastic bags. |
The City distributes recycling containers at five different locations across Philadelphia, free-of-charge. Visit http://64.78.36.115/res_containers.asp for a list of these locations.
4. My office or apartment building doesn't recycle. What can I do?
|
Apartments of five units or less can put out their recyclables at the curbside like normal residences. However, apartment units of 6 or more, and all other commercial buildings are required to recycle under the commercial regulations. IT'S THE LAW! |
The building manager is responsible for your building's recycling program. If you know of a building that is not recycling, talk to the building manager. Get employees or residents to push for starting a recycling program and show that there is support for participating.
Starting a recycling program will require them to hire a private hauler to take away their recyclables, so they may express some resistance. Be positive and don't threaten. Let him or her know that while they will spend time and money starting the recycling program, it will save them money on their trash pickup.
As a last resort, call (215) 685-RECYCLE (7329) and ask for information on Commercial Recycling enforcement.
For more information on Philadelphia's commercial recycling law and for assistance in setting up recycling in an apartment or place of work, visit the Greater Philadelphia Commercial Recycling Council at www.gpcrc.com.
5. I don't know what my recycling pick up day is? How can I find out?
Residential recycling is picked up the same day as trash day. However, some neighborhoods of the City have recycling pick up every week (northwest and Center City) and the remainder of neighborhoods have it every other week.
To view every other week recycling schedules, visit http://64.78.36.115/res_cal.asp.
6. How do I properly dispose of Household Hazardous Waste?
The City administers a Household Hazardous Waste Drop-Off Program. For more information on materials accepted at these drop-off sites and hours/days of operation, visit http://www.phila.gov/streets/hazardous_waste.html.
